What is PDF?

PDF stands for Portable Document Format. It is “the standard” for sharing electronic documents on the web. Adobe® PDF is a universal file format that preserves all of the fonts, formatting, colors, and graphics of any document — viewable and printable on any platform — Macintosh, Microsoft® Windows®, UNIX®, and many mobile platforms. This means anyone producing a document on a Microsoft PC can have it viewed on a Macintosh system or any other system. The document will look the same on both systems, and vice versa.

PDF files are more compact than many file formats, making for less upload and download time. Also, Adobe® PDF documents work with assistive technology to help make information accessible to people with disabilities. For example, a person with poor or no vision can listen to the PDF document as their computer reads it out loud to him/her.

To open a PDF file, you will need Adobe® Reader, which comes on most computers now. But, if you don’t have it on your computer, you can download, for free, the Adobe® Reader.
